Beautiful summer morning! As I put my coffee down on our breakfast bar to go open some doors and windows, my kitchen caught my eye. We remodeled our kitchen a few years ago and I still love it! It’s not … Continue reading →
I’ve been intrigued by the afterlife for many years – even reading memoirs and watching youtube videos about near death experiences and discovering that many accounts describe the afterlife just as the Bible does. As much as I can imagine … Continue reading →
Thank you to Fran Alarie for sharing his story of his parents passing. It is a blessing to know a loved one is ready when the time comes:
Playing God –
On a cold Feb. morning our phone rang while we were in bed. It was one of the caretakers we hired to take care of my parents in their home. The ambulance was there. They said my Dad had a heart attack and asked if they should they try to revive him. My answer was “yes, most definitely”. Keep on trying until he is pronounced dead. He did end up dying of the heart attack.
Several months later my Mom was in the hospital. During the past few months she had been in and out of hospitals. I was visiting her and the nurse said the doctor wanted to talk to me on the phone. He said they finally found the problem. She was bleeding internally. He could operate and fix that, but didn’t know the quality of life she would have. We talked about options and then I had to make a decision. I went into my Mother’s room sat down next to her and held her hand. I told her I knew she wanted to be with my Dad. I told her what the doctor and I talked about. Then I told her that she could go to my Dad now, that I decided to stop all her medications and put her in the hands of God. She smiled. A few minutes later a priest happened to be walking by. I called him in and she received the Last Rites. About ten minutes later I witnessed a miracle afterwhich she went limp and she was gone.
So folks, did I play God, deciding who to let let live and who is to die? No, I don’t think so. My Dad always said, no matter what was wrong, to keep him alive as they may find a cure the next day. My Mom always told me she didn’t want to live hooked up to machines and to let her die if there was no quality of life for her. Those were my instructions and I had to obey them. I was prepared for those two days. It wasn’t hard……I was just being a good son.
Have you made your New Year’s resolutions? Did you remember to include at least one that will strengthen your spiritual life? I can thank my sister and brother-in-law for their gift of a daily devotional prayer book that will not only strengthen my spiritual life, but will strengthen the spiritual relationship between my husband and me. Up until now, we attend church together and say a word of thanks for our meals, but never really prayed together, as a couple. The daily devotional is a perfect way to do that – and it feels good! What was your resolution to strengthen your spiritual life? Happy New Year!
